Pool Play

Hypefestation’s Pool Play

How do the pools work?

A tournament consisting of 32 teams will be filled with 8 pools. Each pool will consist of 4 teams. (Additional teams will create pools with 5 teams instead of the 4 described in the example below.  For tournaments where there exists less than 32 teams, some pools will consist of 3 teams.)

In a generic 32 team tournament, each pool has four teams.  Teams A, B, C, and D. Each team has to play each other once. That means there would be a total of six matches per pool. Matches AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, and DC.

Each pool will be seeded appropriately. For example: Pool one would consist of seeds 1, 9, 17, and 25. Pool 2 would consist of seeds 2, 10, 18, and 26. And so on.

After pool play the tournament will continue as a traditional Double Elimination tournament with 8 teams starting in the winners bracket and 16 teams starting in the losers bracket. The top team from each pool moves to the winners bracket of a Double Elimination tournament. The second and third place teams move on to the losers side bracket of the Double Elimination tournament.

In the event of a two way tie in the pools, the team that won the matchup against the team it is tied with in the pool will win the tie breaker. In the event of a three way tie in the pools, the team that won the most matchups against the other teams it is tied with in the pool will win the tie breaker. If there is still a tie, then the winner will be determined by maps won between those three teams. If there is still a tie, then the winner will be chosen by maps won in the entire pool. Participants that qualified from the same group will be placed in different branches of the bracket in order to meet each other as late as possible in the bracket.

Pool play matches will be played as BO3. All other matches will be played as BO5.

The Continuation Rule no longer exists. A team must lose 2 BO5 matches to be completely eliminated. In Pool Play, a team that starts off in the Losers Side of a Double Elimination bracket carries one loss, and would need to lose once more to be completely eliminated.  Hypefestations full rules and regulations can be seen here.
